California VA Facilities Cited for OSHA Violations 2012-05-25 |
The healthcare sector is among the most highly regulated in the nation, as much of the funding in many instances comes from the government and the livelihood of patients hangs in the balance. This also puts a higher importance on the safety practices of healthcare providers regarding staff.
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently cited several Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities in California, including those in Mather, Martinez, Fairfield and Oakland. According to a release from the agency, the four U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs medical facilities accumulated 30 violations for unhealthy work environs.
"The safety hazards identified at these four clinics demonstrate a need for a renewed commitment by the Department of Veterans Affairs to provide a safe workplace for the VA employees who care for our nation's wounded and aging soldiers," David Shiraishi, director of OSHA's Oakland Area Office, explained in the agency's release.
Some of the violations cited include blocked emergency exits, exposed used hypodermic needles, electrical hazards, and repeat offenses for the unsafe storage of potentially hazardous waste.
