OSHA Fines Firm For Lead Exposure
2012-06-12
The federal government's safety agency recently fined Illinois Gun Works $111,000 because it exposed employees to lead hazards.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration began its inspection in January after being alerted to the situation by the Illinois Department of Public Health. The gun maker was specifically cited for not implementing exposure reduction procedures for lead, not having a proper ventilation system, not replacing clothing that could be harmful and other issues.
"Illinois Gun Works has a responsibility to protect the health of its employees by ensuring that they operate in a manner which eliminates or minimizes lead hazards, including exposure," said Diane Turek, director of OSHA's Chicago North area office in Des Plaines. "OSHA is committed to protecting employees' safety and health."

Those working in the gun industry need to be sure that their employers pay close attention to lead exposure. Last year, OSHA fined Miami-based E.N. Range after high levels of lead were found at its worksite.
