There were nearly 100,000 lost time accidents in 2000 among nurses,
aids and orderlies, placing these workers in the second most hazardous
occupation (Source: US Dept of Labor). In the twelve-month period
from October 2000 to September 2001, Bloodborne
Pathogens and Hazard Communication were the top two most frequently
cited standards against health services by OSHA. Rounding out the
top five were:
Electrical
Safety (OSHA Regs. 1910.305 and 1910.303)
Lock
out / Tag out (OSHA Std. 1910.147)
Recordkeeping
(1904).
The Training Network categorizes safety training for healthcare
workers by Infection Control and Inservice Education. These two
categories generally mirror the departments responsible for training
on different types of safety requirements. For example, Bloodborne
Pathogen video training is easily found under the Infection
Control category and Right-to-Know is contained within Inservice
Education, as is ergonomics, HIPAA, lifting, and general orientation.
