The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that workplace deaths in the
construction industry reached a record level in 2001 by increasing
six percent from 2000. The leading causes of death, in order from
highest to lowest, are: falls, transportation accidents, contact with
an object or equipment and exposure to harmful substances. Further,
according to the National Safety Council's, Injury Facts, 2002, the
top five sources of non-fatal injuries in the construction industry
in 2000, in order from highest to lowest, are: parts and materials,
floor/ground surfaces, worker motion or position, hand tools and machinery.
